Problems with Windows Vista Ultimate and Clarion 6.3
Reply Quote

I have been working with Clarion 6.3 for some time on a Windows XP PRO equipped computer systems without any major glitches.  I recently purchased a new dual core computer with Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit Operating System with Service Pack I.

I installed Clarion 6 and its respective upgrades and templates on the new Vista Ultimate computer.  I run the Clarion program and load my application file without any problems.  I click on the Make button and Clarion initiates and concludes the generate phase.   When it gets to the making phase I get a NTVDM.EXE error message on the screen.  The computer is brand new so I don´t think this is a virus or a damaged file issue, to make sure I ran my trend micro antiviral software which reported no errors and I executed a run sfc /scannow to check the integrity of my operating system files, everything turned out ok.

I did some research regarding NTVDM.EXE and found out the following from the Microsoft support web site :

When a 16-bit application passes command-line parameters to another application on a Windows Vista-based computer, the second application does not receive the command-line parameters

SYMPTOMS

loadTOCNode(1, 'symptoms'); Consider the following scenario. A 16-bit application is running on a Windows Vista-based computer. This 16-bit application passes command-line parameters to another application. For example, the 16-bit application calls the ShellExecute function to start another application. Meanwhile, the 16-bit application passes command-line parameters to the newly started application.

In this scenario, the second application starts. However, the second application does not receive the command-line parameters. Therefore, the second application may not work as expected.

I do not understand why NTVDM.EXE is summoned when I decide to make my application file, even though I began designing the program on the Clarion 4 platform, as far as I know all applications generated with Clarion 6 are 32 bit applications.

According to Microsoft the hot fix for this problem is included with Service Pack I, which as you can see from my computer description above came with my operating system installation disk and is properly installed on my computer.

As you can see, I am experiencing some fairly frustrating issues between Clarion 6.3 and Windows Vista Ultimate Edition.  I would very much appreciate any help or advice you can provide regarding this problem.

Bern,

Looks like the problem isn't with Clarion 6.3, it's with Vista Premium/SP1. See my post at http://www.softvelocity.net/community/forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2703

The reason I think it isn't Clarion 6.3 is because the same thing is happening with 5.5. I'm beginning to suspect SP1. We purposely didn't install SP1 on another Vista (Home Premium) machine, and there both 5.5 and 6.3 compile and link fine.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't use Vista for development work if you paid me! Just bought two more XP machines from Dell to get in under the Microsoft deadline (the third deadline so far!). If there ever was a testament to how badly a piece of software sucks it's the $100 surcharge to "downgrade" to XP.

I'm running Clarion 6.3 on Vista Ultimate SP1 on a new quad core PC and it builds, compiles and runs without problem.

I don't know if this problem still exists but do you have a printer installed? I know in the way back when Clarion had problems on machines with no default printer.
