ODBC Driver (How to distribute)
Reply Quote
Hi,

a while ago I purchased the 5 pack of ODBC - Driver, can i Split this into 5 single licenses and sell them one at a time to 5 different clients ? or is it my personal 5 pack = <g> (I offcourse only need 1)

How do I Distribute them ?

a) Do I ship the SV delivered install and my serialnr ?

or

b) Make my own SetupBuilder script
(Witch files must I redistribute)

I have not started selling this as I`m wery unclear on this (And dont want to breake any licence with SV)

Cheers

Hi Tor,

The way I understand it is that it can be installed 5 times along with your application at your customer site. The question of charging for it i.e. more that SV charges for it is an ethical issue for you to consider.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply :)

Where did you find the licence text ? Yes I suspect that to, but dont realy know.

As for the ethical part:
The ODBC Driver is worthless for my clients without my software, so I tend to think of it as just feature they have to pay for. Also they get an document describing my dictionary, and some How to.

Ethical 2:

I must admit I buy great software modules cheep and sell them (In an wrapping) more expensive all the time :)
I can mention Fomin, Capesoft, Ingasoft etc.

Cheers

Hi Tor,

I was talking about charging for the ODBC driver separately and not as a package along with your application. It's like buying a third-party end-user tool while developing an application - do you add that cost to your Application cost or do you charge it separately? If separately, since it is a product that the customer could have bought directly, do you want to risk the loss of your customer's trust if he finds that you had charged exorbitantly instead of just a small margin to cover your effort for purchasing it and installing it at his site? That's way I think it's an ethical issue. Personally, if I am showing it as a separate item on my Invoice, I would not charge more that what I purchased it for.

Hi

I plan to sell each for 118$ (Sold one already), or if you prefrer: Gave one away for free, and charged 118$ for the document describing my dictionary :)

The 3rd party example was probably wrong, import somthing from the USA multiply it by 2.7 and sell it. This is common for a lot of merchandies. :)

My clients are most welcome to purchase a 5 pack for 250$ (the smalles amount of the ODBC Driver we can buy from over here), and start figurating out the what`s and how`s themself :)

If I buy a shirt , this will cost me ~150$ (in Norway), the production cost is in the figure 1-2$, and in to the store 6$, are the store not etichal ?

The profit made by this shirt have to pay the office-rent, emploees, the shirts that does not sell and so fort...

When I sell an ODBC Driver I also sell responsibillity, I Have to invest time in learning the product, and I have to support it, where and when do I get payd for that ?

I dont feel unethical, just business as usual :)

Cheers

Hi Tor,

In you case, you have added value to the ODBC driver by providing a data dictionary for them to understand the relationships between the tables of your database + provided a service of installing (and training) + taken a commitment to support them for a time period (whatever is the acceptable standard in your country) after purchase. So, naturally you have the right to charge more than what you have purchased the ODBC driver.
