Clarion 7 Alpha released! Rated Excellent [5 out of 5].

We are excited to announce that we have commenced Phase 1 (Alpha) testing for Clarion 7. The Alpha version has been released to 3rd party vendors who had signed up for early access.  Our development team has worked diligently to get the product ready and it is paying off — the new version is really looking good. This last week we did some final tweaks for Vista and we are confident that Clarion 7 runs quite well under Vista.

Phase 1 testing will allow 3rd party developers to prepare Clarion 7 compatible versions of their product(s). Testing will be focused on the C7 RTL and compiler, validation of runtime compatibility with C6, and field trials for the new UI enhancements implemented in C7. Additionally these new IDE components and features will be introduced in Phase 1 and have a thorough shakedown in the field; Project System, Report and Window Designers, Source Editor, Class Browser, and Code Completion .

As soon as we are satisfied with the feedback from Phase 1, we'll initiate Phase 2.  Our plan is to incrementally release individual IDE components in each subsequent Phase.  This will alow us to focus on fixing, tweaking and enhancing individual components before releasing the next one. This approach will make both testing and fixing much more manageable and shorten the entire cycle.  We plan for the new Dictionary Editor to be part of Phase 2, and Phase 3 will introduce the new Data Diagrammer.  The Application Generator is a consumer of all of the other IDE components, and will be introduced in Phase 4.

Between the major overhaul of the RTL in version 6, and the replacement of the IDE, and port or replacement of virtually every major IDE component in C7, we have updated just about every piece of code in the entire Clarion development system, some of it dating back to the beginning of Clarion time.  It's been quite an undertaking but the job is almost complete, and it'll all have been worth the wait. We are behind our schedule for this release, but when it's completed we'll have a solid platform for the future, and most importantly it means that in upcoming months and years ahead we'll be able to implement and release new features very quickly.

Other exciting news, the .Net compiler and RTL are code complete. We've been using Clarion.Net to build a number of components and subsystems of the new IDE so it's had a good real-world shakedown. Clarion.Net will be available very soon after we ship Clarion 7.

Watch for our next progress report via email and/or in this blog space, and thank you all for your continued patience and support.

Also be sure to keep an eye on ClarionMag, Dave Harms will be publishing some in-depth articles on C7, Clarion.Net, and the new IDE.

Many users in the Clarion community do not have any subscription with ClarionMag, and I am one of them. Why SoftVelocity could not simply publish some in-depth articles on C7, Clarion.Net, and the new IDE??

Thanks.

Colin, for certain we'll be posting regular updates as well as new information on upcoming projects.

Kelvin, we'll definitely be posting articles ourselves, but Dave Harms writes for a living and he's darn good at it!

Viggo, thanks and we will!

Hi Robert,

Thanks for thy response. I have good faith with SoftVelocity. I have nothing to complain.

Thanks for all the effort in attempting to perfect such programming terminologies.

WHAHOOOO!!!!! {it is hard to type from the floor}

The fun is just beginning!!!

That is awesome! Does this mean that we can now re-new our CSP/SMP's?

Bob,

It is also great to see the Code Completion feature implemented for C7 as well! I think I may have mentioned in one of the end of year movies that i would not be ready for C7, so I wanted to make sure that this was mentioned.

Thanks for the fantastic news!

Can you tell us what components of Application Generator will be released before Phase 4?

There are lots of 3rd party vendors that specialise in templates...

Acoording to Dave Harms, the documentation for Clarion 7 is still incomplete. So when it reaches near completion, could you please post it on the SV site or email the link to all us CSP subscribers so that we can have a first hand idea about C7 and Clarion.NET possibly.

Is there an expected time frame for each phase?
Given that CSP subscribers have paid in advance for early access, when can we get access?

I understand that V7 is a complete re-write of everything and don't expect it to be bug free - therefore I would like early access just to get used to the new bits before its shipped - simple things like what Dave Harms is reporting on, only I would like to experience it for myself.

V7 is 12 months behind schedule and I would like to get some value from my CSP subscription - PLUS and this important - The sooner I start to evualte the product the sooner I'll be up for a new subscription - if you delay getting me involved it will take a lot longer for you (SV) to get the next cheque - so i guess it's in you interest.

Let's all be commercial - ship it as it is - and lets all share in its success.

The mood (from what i hear) of your client base is not very good, so early access may start getting you some early points, some good PR and maybe some new sales.

You mentioned no part of the IDE has been reworked, has the REPORT WRITER been reworked? That is part of the C7 upgrade, right?

You mentioned being confident of a Q1-2007 release in the previous blog, but now mentioned you are behind schedule. Do you have another date that C7 will get in the hands of CSP subscribers?

I sent private email to you, but hasn't been answered, so I am trying here.

Can you please give another updated time-line/schedule of C7 for CSP Subscribers and can you please let people know the future of the Clarion Report Writer.

Thank you for continued support of the Clarion template chain in C7.

I know we're like second class (no pun intended) citizens sometimes, but I have a very large application which uses the Clarion chain, and I can't afford to move it to ABC in the foreseeable future.

I need the capabilities of a 32-bit IDE, like yesterday. Thanks for doing all the hard work to make it a reality for us. It is appreciated.

I'm posted this here several months after the original message in hopes of not creating a flame on the news server or Clarion Mag.

What SV is accomplishing with C7 is great but there is one thing gnawing at me spawned by the long delivery time and that the Alpha release appears to be at a state of development very near what has be revealed for months now. My concern is this, that at least one of the development teams has hit a brick wall. Possibly that my expectations for C7 and Clarion.Net are not going to be met or exceeded. (High standards, I know!) That the reason we are seeing features like code completion now instead of later is to keep the other teams moving forward while a solution is found or heaven forbid, the product is being scaled back. The last thing that I want is for SV to say "Man I knew we should have kept quiet! Give them a little and the speculation goes wild." I hope I not over-reacting.

Bob Z. is there any way to assure us that the proof of concept is still valid, that phases 2-4 are moving forward, that "knock your socks off" is still in the final feature set.
